The Dogs Spot Boarding and Training facility

Mike and Holly Thurman and Macie

Kim,
I just wanted to let you know how impressed we are with Macie's training.  We have had no issues with her commands (come, sit, down).  She does them without hardly ever having to use negative reinforcement.  We took her on a walk around our 1 mile block without the leash.  We encountered other dogs, fire hydrants, cars and kids and we never had an issue with her taking off.  She came every time we called her and sat and went in the down position when told to.  If she "loses her mind" we have her come and go down and that usually corrects any issue we are having.

Thanks again!
Mike & Holly Thurman

"I have been training with Kim since 2001. I sought her help for basic obedience lessons with my pet golden retriever. Since then she has helped me achieve great success in the obedience competition ring, including many titles and multiple High in Trials. Kim begins each of her students with strong foundation work using positive training methods. She focuses on building drive and attitude in each dog. She encourages her students to set high goals while offering help and support along the way. Kim is an excellent problem solver. She is always able to come up with new ideas when training problems arise. I would highly recommend Kim as a trainer whether your goals are to have a household pet with good manners, or to excel in the obedience competition ring".

Thanks so much, Kim, for giving me the opportunity to brag on my dogs’ accomplishments that you helped make possible. I have three Belgian Tervuren who are both show and performance dogs. You’ve trained them, showed them in the conformation ring and at herding trials. With just a few weeks training at your place, Bliss, my young champion male, skipped the first two levels of herding tests and went straight through to his Herding Started title on sheep. He won it with you working him in just three runs.

When you handled Bliss as a puppy in conformation at the national specialty you moved out with him boldly, let him step into his beautiful stacked pose and made him look elegant and confident. Yes, he won a placement.

I remember a scene that happened in the parking lot of that show. You saw a young dog timid and afraid of people approaching him. With his owner holding him and you directing passersby to walk up to him and give him a treat, the dog relaxed and in less than half an hour was a majestic self confident dog, eager to greet strangers.  I’ve seen you do that with strange dogs while waiting outside the show ring, helping young or nervous dogs get over their fear. You’re generous with your advice and practical help and can both train and handle any dog in conformation.

When I need to board my dogs for any reason they go to you. The dogs think it’s dog camp and love playing there. I know that if I have to leave my boy, Bliss, somewhere while my bitches are in heat that he will be happy and well cared for the extended period of time he’s there. And, to me it’s not just dog camp but dog school. Each time they are there I sign them up to learn something new. They are all conformation champions with herding titles now so next I’ll have you start training and showing all three in obedience competition.

I’ll be having puppies this winter and when I’ve placed them all in good homes and still have the one left I’m keeping, she’ll come to you to learn good puppy manners and socialization.

The only thing that frustrates me is that you’re in Savannah and I’m in Charlotte. I sure wish you’d relocate here. The people of Savannah have a wonderful resource for dog activities in the Dog Spot. Whether training basic skills or manners to pets or showing top dogs in conformation, obedience, or herding, whether the dogs are with you for a lesson, a day or a month, and whether the owners want to learn how to work with their dogs themselves, or simply have you return their dog to them trained, you’re the person for the job and place to make it happen.

Dear Kim,

I am writing to tell you how pleased Ike and I have been with the dog training and obedience you did with our French bulldogs.  These were dogs that our 17 yr old son Reid had gotten, before he died 2 yrs ago and we decided to keep them ourselves and raise. Needless to say we had let them get away with lack of discipline and have ended up with dog fights over jealousy between them. We were at our wits end and did not know what we were going to do. I had bought books and watched The Dog Whisperer and tried numerous things but still they kept fighting, hurting each other and us as well in our attempts to break up the fights.

Luckily I was referred to Kim Tome at The Dog Spot, and we began our official dog obedience training. We started with some basic commands and also reintroduced them to their dog crates that had been put away. Over time, some private training at The Dog Spot, coupled with boarding there Kim was able to show us how to manage these unruly dogs we had almost given up on. With Kim’s years of experience working with all types of breeds, she was able to recognize each dog’s behavior and pattern that was triggering the fights. She was able to show them how to be social but not fighting with other dogs. She did this by including her own dogs that were much bigger than our little frenchie’s who thought they were the TOP DOG.  She later modeled the behaviors we were to continue using at home with them, and IT WORKED! We were able to allow our dogs to be together in the same room and not be so fearful of fighting. We have had a few but they are not anything like it had been. Usually the few we have had were in part due to our forgetting things like leaving food or special toys down and them fighting over that. It has been so nice to be able to have them all out, by all out I mean 5 frenchie’s at this point.  Reid’s dogs have had puppies and we are keeping a couple so we have a zoo in our house but we are able to manage them finally.

Here are a few pictures of them getting along in my husband’s lap, which is their favorite spot to be if you cannot tell. I am so glad we have our own South Georgia dog behavior specialist (Kim Tome), the southern version of Cesar Millan  of Dog Whisperer!!

Thanks again for all; we and OUR DOGS have learned from you, Leigh and Ike Webb

                                 Louanne Burrows and Twister

I am owned by a pack of four Samoyeds.  Twister, my current performance dog, just earned his UD title in addition to his agility MACH2 and rally REA.  When Twister was two , he earned High in Trial in obedience at the Samoyed national specialty.   If you know Samoyeds, they are not biddable, eager-to-please dogs.

I started training Twister with Kim Tome when he was 4 months old and he is now 6.  We started with clicker training and have continued to use mostly positive reinforcement. ( But using other methods when needed)  Kim's knowledge of dog behavior enables her to create unique training methods as problems occur.  And there are always problems cropping up.

Twister has been enthusiastic about obedience which is a great change from my first Sammy's attitude. I feel his attitude and our success are due to Kim's training methods.  My year old puppy is now training with Kim in obedience and conformation.  She also is eager and we are having a great time.

Aimee Cunningham and Maggie

Kim,

Our dog Maggie was an aggressive puppy that we couldn’t control.  Our 3 year old was afraid of her because of her constant jumping and nipping.  We just could not communicate with her about what we wanted her to do.

We sent her to you for training at 13 weeks old.  She stayed with you for 3 weeks.  When we came back to pick her up we were amazed.  MAGGIE WAS CALM!!!  She sat when told to sit.  She went to her mat and lied down on command.  She can be walked calmly on and off the leash.  She came back to us housetrained and dog door trained, but best of all she now understands when she’s doing something wrong with the help of your correction command.

You made everything so easy for us.  When we brought Maggie home, my husband said, “It’s like she’s a completely different dog.”  We can’t thank you enough for giving us the ability to communicate with our dog.  Maggie is now a joy to be around.  My little boy even commented the other day, “I love Maggie, she’s my best friend.”  We are very happy with the results of your training and have let many of our friends know about you.  We are attaching some pictures of Oliver and Maggie.

Sincerely,

Rebecca Lingle and Achilles

My husband and I would never own another dog without sending him through obedience classes. After our breeder recommended Kim to us, we put our Doberman puppy, Achilles, through her basic obedience class and her off-leash class, as well as bringing him to her puppy socialization classes. We began to see results after the very first week of classes and homework. He learned a lot, and so did we. She had to re-teach us how to think about training our dog. Her methods are very positive, and it shows, because Achilles looks forward to our training sessions with him at home and he just loves going out to Kim's!

Before taking the classes, we struggled with things like him pulling against the leash when we took him for a walk, running away from us when we let him out the door without his leash on, etc. At this point, he does a great down-stay, comes when called without hesitation and walks next to us both on and off the leash. It is so much fun to have a well-behaved dog! We've been able to take him camping and hiking, as well as to lots of public events, and he gets compliments wherever he goes. He's a pleasure to be around, and we owe a huge part of that to Kim's classes. Thanks, Kim!

Melchor and Joe Hines and Royce, Harley and Davidson

I am so pleased to have found Kim Tome and The Dogs Spot as are my three standard poodles Royce, Harley and Davidson.  The puppies Harley and Davidson have been saved from being given to strangers on the street by Kim’s  training. They were far too much to handle.  They arrived at 2 months old, brothers and took over.  They are now easy to live with, have manners but still have spirit and are clowns. I never had to be fearful o f Kim being too harsh or hurting them or breaking their spirit they love her. The oldest, Royce 11 years of age and very particular stands up in the car when we go down the drive leaps out and runs to her and kisses her. That reaction sealed it. They are boarders for life. The Dogs Spot is safe and clean. It lets them play safely with a huge amount of room fenced in, They play with other dogs and learn from the pack. We for the first time rest easy when we wave goodbye when boarding them as they are thrilled to be back at camp.  thanks Kim.     Melchor, Joe, Harley , Davidson and Royce
