Kim Tome is the owner/operator of The Dogs Spot. Originally from Australia she grew up with animals having owned horses, dogs, cats, birds, Guniea Pigs and a goat. It was in Australia at the age of 12 that she got her first taste of dog training. Her grandfather, who bred GSD’s, taught her how to train her German Shepherd, Lashka.
After moving to the States to be with her then husband Jeff she saw a need in the local pet care community for a Dog Daycare and soon after in 2001 The Canine Education Center came into being. This was a dog daycare center and training facility located in Savannah GA. After 5 years of daily commuting and a divorce Kim decided to consolidate her home and business. Purchasing the property in Ellabell and having a name change to The Dogs Spot were the first steps. The final step being the completion of the 3000 square foot, climate controlled training building. The Dogs Spot has been going strong in Ellabell since 2005.
Kim is well qualified for her job having earned over 55 titles on her own and clients dogs in AKC and UKC obedience, agility, conformation and herding. Including two Obedience Trial Champions and over 50 High in Trial awards. In addition her Doberman “Bama” was nationally ranked in the Doberman Pinscher Club of Americas Top Twenty competition for 5 consecutive years and winning the event in Boston in 2002.
Her Belgian Tervuren “Zeik” was nationally ranked for three years with the American Belgian Tervuren Club. Kim has been invited to compete in the AKC’s annual Obedience Invitational three times with two different dogs. In order to be invited you have to be one of the top three dogs of your breed for the breeds that she owns. Kim has also been invited to compete in the UKC’s All Star event twice in both Open and Utility competition. In addition she has earned 8 Front and Finish Awards and a perfect score of “200”. Her Doberman “Bama” has even appeared in the movie Undertow with Josh Lucas, Jamie Bell and Dermot Mulroney. Her only litter of Dobermans produced a Top 20 contender in conformation in 2002. Kim also had the opportunity to help make Doberman history, she piloted “Stat” to his Top 20 ranking in obedience to complement his conformation Top 20 ranking making him the second Doberman in the history of the breed to achieve a ranking in both venues in the same year. This made “Stat” the first recipient of the Ryan award. See the Making History page for more info.
Kim’s training methods include a sound balanced approach to dog training. After having trained with and attended seminars of some of the USA’s top trainers Kim has a large variety of training experience and ideas to draw from.
