🐾 A Tiny Training Tip That Makes a BIG Difference
Does your dog actually know their name?
It sounds silly. Of course they know their name… right?
But sometimes a dog learns that their name means:
“There’s some noise happening over there.”
Instead, we want their name to mean:
“Hey! Look at my person.”
Try this today:
When your dog is hanging out near you, say their name one time.
The second they turn their head and look at you, praise them.
“YES! Good dog!”
You can give them a treat, a little affection, or just make a big happy fuss over them.
Then go back to whatever you were doing.
Do it again a little later.
The important part:
Don’t say: “Bella… Bella… BELLA… BELLA!”
Every time we repeat a cue without getting a response, we accidentally teach the dog that the first few times don’t really count.
One name. One response. Big praise. 🎉
